Immediate Denture Insertions

Immediate dentures are a type of full or partial denture that we can insert immediately following the removal of your natural teeth. This makes them a popular choice for those not yet ready for a permanent denture solution or who may only require dentures for a short time. Our dental prosthetists at Port Denture Clinic in Port Macquarie are more than happy to discuss the immediate dentures in process with you during your initial consultation.

First, we will take impressions of your mouth to create a custom-fit denture. Our team will liaise with your dentist to organise an extraction appointment on your behalf once we know what date your new dentures will be ready. We highly recommend attending your follow-up appointments so we can perform any required adjustments or relines of your dentures.

Contact Port Denture Clinic today on (02) 5526 2468 to learn more about immediate dentures. From our clinic in Port Macquarie, we see patients from across the Mid North Coast region and surrounding areas, including Wauchope, Laurieton, Bonny Hills and Kempsey.

Require Immediate Dentures?

Immediate dentures aren’t designed to replace missing teeth for good—they simply provide comfort and stability during the weeks or months that it will take you to get the implants or other prosthetic attachments needed for permanent replacement teeth. They are made from a soft and flexible material to protect your remaining teeth and gums from damage as your mouth heals from the extraction.

At first glance, it can be difficult to differentiate an immediate denture from a standard set of dentures. However, the differences are simple and they make a big difference in how you feel about your dentures.

On the other hand, permanent dentures are usually made of metal and acrylic components that can be permanently fastened to your gums. They will replace teeth with sturdier, more cosmetic replacements—essentially, they’re designed to last for as long as you need them!

Our Denture Options

If you are having your teeth removed and believe that dentures may be the right fit for you, talk to our team! We’ll chat with you about the requirements involved and evaluate your eligibility.

We offer two main options for patients who are considering dentures after teeth removal:

1. Immediate dentures – Fitted at the time of your tooth extraction, immediate dentures are pre-made to be ready for insertion on the same day.

2. Delayed immediate dentures – Delayed dentures are manufactured around 6 weeks following your extraction. We only use this option for patients whose teeth are too loose or over-erupted.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How long do dentures last?

You will most likely have your dentures for approximately 7 to 10 years. While the dentures themselves may last much longer, they can be a breeding ground for germs that cause oral health problems.

  • Why do my dentures become loose when I eat?

When you first get your dentures, it may take some time to learn how to comfortably eat certain foods, such as raw vegetables and sandwiches. If this happens with all food, please contact us as you may need an adjustment. For older dentures, it may mean it is time for a new set.

  • Will dentures cause a lisp?

It may take some time for you to feel like you are speaking normally again. The more you talk, sing or read out loud, the easier it will become.

  • Why do new dentures need adjusting?

It’s common for new denture wearers, especially immediately after having teeth extracted, to have some swelling. Due to this swelling and pressure sometimes created by your mouth getting used to the dentures, you may need your set adjusted soon after having them made and fitted. After some time, when your mouth has finished settling and changing, you will need a reline to renew the fit.
